4.5.1.2 Hypotheses

For this experiment, I investigate the following hypotheses, which are derived from the Aktionsart generalization in (6) proposed in Truswell (2007). Note that Truswell (2007) does not discuss relativization; I assume that the same predictions as for wh-extraction hold here because both structures instantiate A′-extraction from an adjunct constituent.

(11) Hypotheses for Experiment 1

H1a. adjunct telicity has a significant effect in declaratives: conditions with atelic adjuncts are significantly more acceptable than conditions with telic adjuncts; see Truswell (2007: 1373).

H1b. No significant effect of matrix telicity in declaratives: conditions with telic and atelic matrix predicates are equally acceptable; see Truswell (2007: 1373).

H1c. Under wh-extraction and relativization, both matrix telicity and adjunct telicity show significant effects: the condition with a telic matrix and atelic adjunct predicate is significantly more acceptable than the other three conditions; see Truswell (2007: 1369).
